the drama of a new license... and parking permits...
this day is becoming very very annoying. i first tried to get my parking permit, city of chicago sticker, and visitor parking permits... but in order to do that i must have a valid IL license. so since i was going to do that anyways, i went next door to get that done. well, i didnt have my SSN card or my passport so i couldnt do that either. and NOW i have to take an eye exam and written test b/c everyone getting an IL license for the first time has to do that. even bigger pain in the ass!! i haven't taken that damn test in 13 years. now i have to read the f'in book and make sure i know how to operate a car even though i've been driving for almost 15 years and have a completely clean record. and then i have to go do it all over just to get everything. luckily the 2 buildings are directly across the street from me which is the ONLY convenient part of all of this. but, to make matters more fun.... i now have to go dig thru everything to try and find my SSN card which i never use b/c i have the number memorized and no one ever asks to see the actual card. i don't know where it is. so i looked to see how to get a replacement one. well that's even a bigger pain in the ass than digging thru boxes and old wallets and stuff looking for the stupid card that i originally had. i hate this stupid state and their stupid requirements. not really, but i'm frustrated by their rules! all ca wanted was my passport or something easy and no tests! i dont even remember now. but it was easy. ugh. so annoyed!! i'm sure round two will be just as much fun...

Ah yes...the drama of applying for licenses out of state and the problems of finding your social security card.
As I work for the state they were very keen for me to produce my actual SS card (not just a copy) as well as my parents ss card #s, a birth certificate. I also had to do a heavy lifting exam which was totally strange. The good news is that I passed. Whoo hoo! Thank you 24 Hour Fitness.
BUT, I couldn't find my SS card and spent a truly horrible afternoon at the SS card office re-applying. Seriously. It was bad. The good news is that I had my new card w/in a few weeks. That part was actually realy fast but still, I hope you can find your card!
Good luck studying for the DMV written test. I will be emailing you in the future if I have questions about when I can legally use my fog lights.
i have to have my ss card handy too, as i work for the state as well. i didn't have to do a heavy lifting test, even though i used to lift kindergartners, but they are pretty light, and those community college students are much heavier, so that's probably why sarah had to take that test =)
that sounds so incredibly irritating, and a huge waste of time. you need a cocktail. If i remember correctly, when i applied for my CA license freshman year and had to read the book, i had a question on something to do with trailers... when on earth would i ever need a trailer? i don't own a horse.
You girls getting married - remember, you're going to have to go through the SS office again when/if you change your last name.
patrick has been trying to do that whole processy-thing too...at least something similar so that he can sell his car. i think we have his city stickers so far (expensive - yowza)...and IL plates ... it's all v. frustrating. i have been happily avoiding an IL license, since my car is still registered to california... but i think that's all illegal since i am a resident here now. oh well...sounds like a pain in the buns!
I totally remember when Courtney was studying for the written test our first year at Scripps. She was not a happy DMV camper about having to take it.
BTW when I went to the SS office the person who helped me in line automatically assumed that I was there to change my name because I'd gotten married. I guess she based this snap judgement based on my appearance. Apparently married, changing last name is the SS office identity into which I fit at this point in my life.
wow! i feel so excited that i've gotten so many comments!! since that day, i've done nothing. i haven't gotten a booklet to read up on my driving skills nor have i attempted to look for that dang card. haven't felt like it quite yet. still annoyed from the whole experience!
i don't remember having to do anything other than the eye test in ca. i got my ca license after college in newport, i think, but i don't remember any challenges in actually getting it. in fact, i remember it being quite easy. i even was able to make an appt online so the wait wasn't an issue at all. dang illinois!
and i have to do it soon, b/c right now my car has IL plates and i don't have a matching license. i think that could be a nice fine if i get caught.... and that would suck!
Just saying happy birthday to you !!! Hope you're having a great day.
Sarah
want to hear something really bad? i still have my texas license, iowa license plates, and i am a ct. resident. next time you hear from me could be from a jail cell.
