doin the hustle...

anyone have that song in their head now?! yeah, i do... do the hustle..do dododo doooo dooo dooooo.... disco, baby!

anyways... on sunday, the 28th (of feb) i earned another medal... hustling up the hancock in their annual event (my second year to do so). alllllll 94 floors of pure climbing fun!! stair climbing is hard!!

in this pic, i am at the bottom - just started out and thinking, wtf was i thinking signing up for this?!!? love that my eyes are shut.

as i was on one of the middle-ish floors, i stopped to take a break. a familiar looking girl whose name i could swear was erin was standing there catching her breath and taking a break. i was racking my brain databases trying to figure out how i knew her name: former work life? junior league? team in training??? and then she looked at me and i looked at her... and she looked at my number (which had our names on it) and she was all, katherine! i knew it! and then i looked at her name, and i was right - it was erin! turns out she was a scrippsie - i think the class behind us - erin lennon. she's teaching math something or other at northwestern. how random to run in to a scrippsie on like the 40th-something floor of the hancock building!! we happened to have the same start time which in itself is random b/c there are at least 20 waves from like 7am until 12:30ish. the waves are 15 mins apart and each person gets 8 seconds to hit the stairs before the next person.

while it took me about 36 mins to get to the top, i will say that i was faster than last year... and i wasted a few minutes talking to erin before i realized i should get going since this was a race! they say that climbing up to the top should take about the same amount of time as a 5k would...the fastest guy won in 9:33. yes, 94 floors in 9 minutes and 33 seconds. jerk. and the fastest woman wasn't even a woman! it was a 12 year old girl who finished in like 12 minutes. unreal. next year. maybe i'll train and be faster! or maybe not... but it is a fun event!
