kansas city work trip

sun - wed...

this trip sucked. after sarah's wedding i had to fly in to chicago and change planes to head straight to kc for work. no going home... booo! so b/c my flight was delayed and then so was my boss' (he was on united, i was on american), we didn't get to the hotel til well after midnight. the next day (or rather the same day, a few hours later) we had to be up bright eyed and ready to work. i had a presentation to give. in fact, i had 4, 1 hr long presentations to give in 3 days to 4 different law firms. and i was exhausted... no time to rest! so finally, i got to go home on wed evening. and then, on fri i got to leave to go back to ca for holly's wedding! more on that in the next post.

sarah's gorgeous wedding!!

details to come - but i arrived last Wed (had an amazing time!)

wed night
thurs luncheon and dinner
fri rehearsal and rehearsal dinner

sun flying, flying, flying

details and pics to follow!

Wednesday:

I arrived at lax and sarah so graciously met me at the baggage claim. From there, we drove to Glendale and made it just in time for my hair appt and airbrushing session. Since I had no time to get my hair done prior to flying out for the wedding, sarah was wonderful in booking that for me. She was going to be getting airbrushed while I got my cut and highlights. Since she had originally gone to another salon, she left me at the aveda salon and went to her airbrush appt. sarah’s turned out great, and mine, well… read my review that I posted on yelp.com.
*however, and this is a BIG however, my friend the bride decided to do airbrushing for her wedding and so i thought that would be a great idea. she had already purchased a package from another salon and b/c of timing she booked me at the aveda salon. i have been airbrushed about 5 or 6 times (in NYC, at a fabulous salon, not aveda related) prior to this experience and have always been extremely pleased. i had no reason to believe that aveda would be any different. please be aware that my airbrush experience was horrifying and the results were beyond horrible.

asha did my airbrushing. i should have known when things got started we were off on a bad foot, but hey they are the professionals so i let her do her thing. first of all, they did my airbrushing while my color was processing - yeah, water makes it streak. then the actual airbrush took place in on of the bathrooms. yes, you read correctly - a bathroom. a salon of aveda's quality - i would have expected a private treatment room. and at the other salon, they had me put lotion on my elbows and knees and they had loose powder to make me less sticky, and they also had a fan to dry me. she said 5 mins would be ok, i knew that i needed like 15 to dry. and i basically had to tell her where to spray and ask if she was going to spray my hands/feet. are you kidding? why didn't i just walk out? i have no idea... i guess it goes back to she's the professional and i'm not. in any case, after my streaky wetness, asha redid my spraying. the next morning i woke up (after the color had time to set) and i was beyond streaky - i mean i could have done a better job blind with my own hands using the worst self tanner product ever. my elbows and feet were deep orange, i had a streak of white down the back of my arm, i had splotches, streaks, drips, half orange/half white mess. i FREAKED. remember that wedding i came in to town for? yes, it was only 2 days away and i was a bridesmaid in a strapless dress.

my friend the bride (who did not need the added stress and i felt terrible) drove over to the salon with me that next morning (i was staying with her). asha was not there, but the woman there did handle it very well. i must admit that. however, nothing they scrubbed on me could get it off. then they called the company which said to use whitening toothpaste (folks this does not work, i tried!!). she gave me my money back (75 bucks!!! + tip + $5 for the toothpaste) and she gave me a few free products. my poor skin, the next few days, i scrubbed and scrubbed. luckily you can't tell in the pictures, but if you looked at me you could definitely see in person tho i must admit it was somewhat better by the weekend. it ended up lasting and fading over a couple weeks, but as it did, i looked like i had a terrible skin disease. i really really hope that no one has to go through what i did. it was beyond stressful and upsetting. i'm still upset (obviously).

and oh yes, they take credit cards but not for tip. too bad i had zero dollars in my wallet and nobody had informed us of that beforehand. my friend's fiance came to pick us up and go to dinner and i had to borrow money from him until i could get to an atm. how embarrassing.* I don’t blame you sarah! I know you know that, but wanted to reiterate that fact. There is no way anyone could have known how it would turn out. The other reviews are very favorable for the salon. And the hair was great!

Thursday:

You already read about our morning and our trip back to the aveda salon... so let's move on to happier things! we left glendale for pasadena where we were going to be staying at the langham hotel formerly known as the ritz. courtney (with slight help from me) planned a wonderful luncheon in the restaurant by the pool and we had a delicious brunch and shower for sarah. she got all kinds of fun lingerie and kitchen items. the theme being "naughty in the kitchen".

popcorn! i've been tagged...

ok oki'll do the whole popcorn tagging thing... i'm sorry i've been such a crappy blogger... stay tuned and stay with me and i promise more updates... but seriously this past month and this month are absolutely crazy for me!!

1. 10 years ago...

i had just finished up freshman year of college (since all you other scrippsies were too) and i was probably missing matt and planning a trip to go see him... wonder what ever happened to him.. last i heard which was years ago was that he was living in texas.

2. 5 things on my to do list today...

good grief... i have way more than 5!

*learn my presentation for monday - my first one and my boss will be watching!! yikes, i'm so nervous!!
*bcbg - i need a pair of black pants and theirs are long enough
*get gold shoes for sarah's wedding
*get sarah and holly's wedding presents taken care of
*maybe work in a few hours at the blues fest

3. my favorite snacks...

*chips and salsa (but i try not to have the chips around)
*100 calorie popcorn (both butter and kettle)
*100 calorie pack cookies
*m&ms (but i never buy them bc i'd eat too many - but i love a mixture of plain, peanut, and peanut butter... yum!)
*hmmm... i don't know! this is actually kinda hard for me!

4. if i was a millionaire...

well, i'd need to be a serious multi-millionaire, but i would be a lot less stressed out and i would do a lot more traveling to exotic places!! and frankly, i'd do some serious shopping in nyc of course! i'd hit of searle, saks, barney's, bergdorfs, and all the adorable boutiques and probably come home with way too many pairs of shoes and way too many handbags... i'd hire a trainer to get me seriously back in shape. i'd buy a new house in chicago - a gorgeous penthouse or townhouse with many outdoor spaces. i'd buy a vacation home in leland, mi. and maybe even one in ca. and of course i need a boat for lake michigan and probably one for each of my other houses too. and i'd do one of the abercrombie and kent travel dealios where they fly around in private planes. that would be cool. i think i would still work, but i'd want more of a mon, wed, fri schedule. every other day off sounds fantastic in theory but i bet i'd get bored after awhile. so i would continue down the career path i'm on now. and then of course, i would gladly help my parents and my brother and give them all some money to play with...

5. places i've lived...

in order

*chapel hill, nc
*houston, tx
*culver, in
*claremont, ca
*kalispell, mt
*thailand (for 3 months, but i think it counts)
*newport beach, ca
*nyc
*chicago

hmmm, i think that's it!

so there you go... this post will have to do for awhile bc i have to jump in the shower. i all sweaty and nasty from my 6 mile run/walk today! i am not up to full running yet - i am still at the 4/2 pace - 4 mins run, 2 mins walk. the coaches all say i have plenty of time. i'm trusting them on this!!

my cousin caitlin visits!

and... for the first time i had to work on the weekend! i felt terrible... but i think we still managed to have fun. i know i did! i just wish i could have done more with her.

i'll have to fill in everyone on the weekend later... my friend lauren is getting ready to pick me up for some happy hour cocktails... i'm sad - she's actually moving back to ca on the 22nd! booooo for moving back!

ok, back to caitlin's weekend.... it started off so so stressful!! caitlin was flying in to chicago the same time i was flying back from my florida sales training trip. we were supposed to get there right around the same time and it should have worked out perfectly. however, united didn't give a crap about my plan and my flight was delayed for 6 hours (8 hrs in the airport) and then they finally cancelled it b/c the pilots had gone over their allotted hours. greaaaaat. b/c my boss and i had to give a conf call 10am cst, there was no flight that would get us home in time and no flight we could get on before 2. ridiculous. even that flight was late. arghhh. so frustrating. so, i called caitlin and told her what was up. luckily our aunt and uncle live here and we (after lots of back and forth) were finally able to work it out for them to pick her up at the airport and stay at their place for the night. i felt terrible, but what the heck could i do?!?! it wasn't like i wanted or made this happen... so anyways, i finally get back thursday night... so we hung out that night and then the next day i went to work and caitlin went for a run and kept herself occupied with whatever it was she felt like doing.

we ordered in on friday and watched some movies on tv and then i got up sat to train and she slept in (lucky!). when i got home, we showered and got dressed and headed over to bucktown/wicker park for brunch with devon. we went to hot chocolate and had amazing food: warm donuts, pancakes, and other amazing food items. yum! after brunch, dev, caitlin, and i hit up bcbg cause it was across the street and spent way too much time trying on a thousand dressed, but it was fun! and then i needed to come home and prepare for my first presentation at work that i had to give. my boss was going to be there so of course i put way too much pressure on myself. my aunt and uncle called to see if we would like to go to a movie and dinner. so we joined them for 'you dont mess with the zohan" which was actually very funny and then went to an italian place for dinner. afterwards, we headed home and for bed (it was late, you know like 12:30am!!) on sunday, i had to work on the presentation and so my uncle and caitlin went to the printer's row book fair for a few hours and then came back to see if i wanted to go to dinner. well, i couldn't b/c i had stressed myself out so much i'd had a break down while they were gone on the phone with my mom... so i really did need to work. so they went to dinner and so very nicely brought me back some gnocchi (seriously 3 italian dinners in a row is ridiculous) and i gave my presentation to caitlin who was a great listener. and then at some point, we decided we needed chocolate. i didn't have any so caitlin being the wonderful cousin she is made a run for cvs and a couple of candy bars and we sat on the couch, watched some tv, and ate our candy bars...

the next day, i did my presenation. i kicked ass so all that pressure and anxiety was really for nothing... that's what always happens to me though. so anyways, then i came home from work and had to take caitlin to the airport to catch her flight and then pack to get ready and go on my trip. i can't remember where the heck i was going... i was so sad to see her go!!!

orlando work trip

so, the week of 6/2 i went on my first company trip to orlando for sales training. i was supposed to be there until wednesday afternoon, but that didn't quite happen.

i flew down on united with my boss and everything went very smoothly. we got to the hotel - again easy. we checked in and then met up with fellow coworkers from around the east coast for some drinks. from there my team went to a sushi dinner that was yummy. on my team are my boss, me, another sales rep, and a marketing person. it was fun to meet the various sales people from around the country! one of them is a marathoner and so we talked and she gave me some good advice. on tuesday, the sales training started and it went all day. i won't bore you with the details... and then on tues night we all went out to dinner at a trendy spot called, hue. it was very good. there are probably 15-20 of us that do sales for what is the eastern half of the country. wednesday was more sales training and then we all left for the airport. we piled in to various coworkers cars who had driven from their respective cities (a few came from around fl and had driven). then we got to the airport, and hell started.

our flight had been delayed - my boss and i were on the same flights - so we milled around the airport which actually has quite a few shops (and no i didn't buy a thing!) and then went to sit in chili's. everytime we looked at the flight status board, our flight was delayed more and more. meanwhile, i'm getting nervous b/c my cousin was flying out and meeting me in chicago. we were supposed to have landed about the same time, but that wasn't going to happen now. so i talked to my aunt and uncle and after some annoying back and forths, they finally agreed to pick up my cousin caitlin and let her stay with them for the night since i wouldn't get back until late. yeah, it was late alright... but i'll get to that. so it's about 845 that night (we got there about 330) and we decide to go check with the counter agent b/c now our flight is showing as if it is ontime and that couldn't be right. well, the counter agent, margarita (like the drink she said) told us that our plane was in the air from dc on route to orlando. that plane had been super delayed due to bad weather. well, the kicker was that by the time the plane arrived, the pilots would be past their allowed flying hours. but, margarita said that since the pilots were based in chicago, they could wave that right. ummm, a little scary, but we wanted to go home. she said they wouldn't know anything til around 10. oh joy. around 945, margarita told us our flight had been officially cancelled. fantastic. so my boss arranged the rooms and we got in line to get our new flights. the problem was that we had a conference call that my boss had to lead and i needed to be on at 10am central time! there was no flight that could get us there early enough and the flight that we could reasonably make after that was at 220ish. arghh... so, off to the doubletree at the airport...

the doubletree only had 2 rooms. smoking rooms. it was about 1030 by this point and we are exhausted and so whatever, we took them. there weren't any other rooms bc my boss had checked at other hotels and apparently other people were stranded too. i went up to my room and opened the door and holy crap, the smoky nasty smell hit me like a ton of bricks. it was awful. i came home with smoky smelling clothes... ewww...

so back to the airport. our flight shows on time. we are both skeptical. but surprisingly they board us and push back. only to turn off the engines and sit on the runway for 30 mins. you've got to be kidding me at this point. and don't forget that i'm coming from orlando... home of disneyworld and every screaming crying kid on the plane that didn't want to go home. so then the flight finally takes off...yay! then we land. yay! and then, we sat on the runway for about another 30 mins b/c we had to wait for a gate. good grief somebody shoot me at this point...

well, finally we get off the plane and take the blue line home. my boss lives in bucktown so he took it all the way home. i got off at belmont and jumped in to a cab. and finally got home, where my cousin caitlin was awaiting my arrival. more on that weekend to come!
