happy halloweeeeeeeeeeeeen!!

so i don't have an adorable kid. i do have an adorable cat. but he has a fat head that doesn't fit in to the little chicken costume thing i got him. grrr. and i don't so much get that creative to try something else. yet. but! i do happen to have an old pic...back in 1983, i was 4... my brother had just turned 2 and we were actually holding hands! and while that might look like a costume, i can tell you that he wore that everywhere. he ate, played, and slept in that thing for god knows how long, but i have proof of this b/c there are tons of pics of him not on halloween wearing his superman outfit! and i think it's adorable. thankfully i did not have the same obsession with ernie!

and i just had to show my dad's trick or treating attire. he made this outfit from his lab experiment clothes and attached an elastic strap to the back of a pumpkin decoration as his mask. that's beyond creative for the harpers! i bet my dad scared a few kids in that outfit! can you imagine a 6'2 pumpkin walking around the neighborhood?!

the otis bear.

otis wanted to say hello to everyone, so hi!

just chillin'

hi!

poor otis. he seems to feel just fine: purring, eating, massive amounts of running up and down the hallway and stairs, playing, and snuggling... but for some reason he just keeps losing weight and we aren't sure why. so i will be taking otis to a specialist this week. i sure hope they can figure it out!! but i keep trying to make him eat more and more and more. he's definitely not on a diet... lucky guy... gets to eat as much as he wants! hopefully i'll have some not bad news to share soon.

20/30 boat cruise

on a lovely summer evening, some of us gals got together to join the men of the 20/30 club of chicago to enjoy an evening boat cruise. the 20/30 club is the men's version of the junior league - they are committed to helping the underprivileged children of chicago.

this is catherine (with a c), kyle, katherine (with a k, or katherine 2), and stef.

such a pretty back drop! cruising on the river and lake is just beyond beautiful. here's lucky tony in the middle of us lovely ladies!

just as this poor boat captainy guy was yelling at us to not sit on the edge of the boat for another snapshot, we made him jump in our picture!

green tie ball

the green tie ball is a big bash thrown every year to benefit the greening and beautifying of chicago. this year's was on the 17th of sept and was held outside on a really beautiful night. there were tons of restaurants there and the food was delicious! the ticket price included all the food from the various stations and as much as you could drink. over 2000 people support the beautification and greenifying of chicago!

this is ed, me, laura, curt, catherine, and rob

there were all these tents set up and the theme was a return to emerald city hence all the green and oz themes...

i liked these random guys... no idea who the following people are either... just pulled their pics from fb and had to share some of the better ones!

moving?!

yep, moving. in fact, already moved is more like it! why? i've gotten that question a lot. well, i've always wanted a roof deck. so now i have one! and a lot brighter place with all the windows that i don't have to close the blinds on b/c there is no one to stare at me! mom put the idea in my head after the move to ca was obviously not going to work out and i'd accepted my new job. so i happened to find a great location with a roof deck and saw there was an open house and i went. that's where i met my realtor.

i ended up not liking the place, but started looking around with him at potential places. i was quite specific (must be close to el, roofdeck, easy walking, same neighborhood area, better than my current place) and wasn't even sure i would find anything to meet those criteria. we spent about 3 weekends looking at various places and found two that i really liked. the first one had been on the market for a very long time and the realtor let us see it without telling us he had a renter lined up - of course i loved it and was ready to put in an offer - the views! - but the owner went through with the renter. the next weekend, i found a fabulous place - but then the bombshell - there was no roofdeck. wait, what?! that's the only reason we were looking at it! the brochure said roof rights... apparently that means i could petition the board, figure out if it was even feasible, and build the roofdeck myself. are you kidding?! i thought about it for about 5 minutes before realizing that it would be the biggest p.i.t.a and no thanks. so the search continued. more houses seen. none were right. and then... literally the last place on the list of potentials and it was this place! i was ready to wait for more properties fitting my criteria were available... but then i walked in here and just knew... it was home. and that's how it all happened!

if you google directions from the old place to the new one, i'm literally around the corner and from garage to garage my odometer says .4 miles. yep, i went far! but, it puts me closer to the gym (sure, i've been there since the move), across the street from core power yoga, some good bars, and restaurants. i even have a nice starbucks just down the street. and yes, i am quite close to two different el stops. while it is just around the corner, it puts me in a different "close" walking range which is fun! and i no longer have to walk down a partially darkened street or the alley!

the outside of the building - i'm the very top on the right!

my kitchen - i love the island! the granite slab is so pretty and the background tiles are even almost scrippsie green! i have very pretty appliances too... my stove has red knobs... maybe some day i'll learn how to use it!

see? pretty red knobs and scrippsie green tiles!

my big bedroom with a deck off of it - this is the old owner's stuff in all these pics.

my new bathroom. it has a sink on the other side too and a potty closet!

up on the rooftop, i have lots of pretty plants and a very big expansive view. it's amazing!

i put it in the contract that they had to leave all the patio furniture, built in speakers, tvs, and window treatments (blinds/curtains)!!

otis looooooooves the fresh air!

just checkin' out the plants!

i have a laundry room and full size washer and dryer with so many buttons! and there's room to make it otis' potty room too!

and i have a pantry! i can store stuff!

and here's the balcony off the living room. it's a great spot for breakfast! (that's their kitty, not a new friend for otis)

otis and i made the move on oct 1st and we are still getting settled. we have tons and tons of work to do. ok, maybe it's more like i have tons of stuff to do still. but it feels like home and i am in love with it (which is definitely a good thing since it's all mine!!).

otis loves being able to go outside on the balcony and roof. he loves all the fresh air and the stairs. there is a super long hallway and he loves to gallop up and down it. he's funny. he's currently snoozing right next to me...

so who would like to reserve a room at chez harper?! i've had my mom and dad with my aunt here last weekend and the sunday after i moved in my friend, anne, crashed here before an appt in the city. so the hotel is open, come on over!!

**more pics coming soon with my stuff in them not their stuff**

the junior league hosts a number of parties throughout the year and this is one of the biggest ones - and this year's theme for summer soiree (held in august of course) was the great gatsby.

y vs s

every year during the summer, the culver alumni group gets together and has a game night. while it is at the cell (home of the white sox not the cubs), it is to honor the yankees (boo, yes, i know). more specifically, we celebrate one of our famous alums: george steinbrenner. for those of you not familiar - george is the owner of the yankees and since his passing this past year or two, his family is now at the helm. we got to have some hot dogs, beers and alumni cheer in one of the suites. it was a lot of fun!

anne came in to town for the weekend to join me for this event. she's the class of 96. and stef joined in on the festivities as well as our guest.
