suggestions please!

hi ladies, i need your suggestions. i'm bored. so so so bored. i really need a job (and i'm working on that), but in the meantime, i need suggestions for things to do during the day to keep me occupied. here are my requirements: cheap or free. seeing as though i have no job, things need to be fun yet won't cost me a lot of money. all of you are so creative so i thought i'd reach out and ask for your help. and please - don't tell me to go for a walk outside... i would love to do that, but unfortunately the weather here doesn't always cooperate with that... and i already go to the gym everyday (except for the last week b/c i've been sick). and i also go to starbucks and read sometimes since i have what seems like a never ending supply of 5 dollar gift cards from when i worked for my company in ny. so other than gym, starbucks, walking outside, and watching tv...what suggestions do you all have?!?!

Be sure to search the internet for the FREE museum days--I am pretty sure there's a free museum every weekday!

Hit the Harold Washington Library downtown--always programs going on there. Plus--you can get a listing of the programs going on at other neighborhood libraries. I've seen many AMAZING speakers at the Library!

Visit friends like ME! Come and meet the boys on any Tuesday morning!!

This is your chance to learn how to cook! Go browse the cookbooks at the bookstore and buy one that looks exciting, and have a go at it! Be sure to get one with recipes that are EASY, or you will be turned off. I learned to cook through Joy of Cooking, but there are no pictures in it, it might be easier to start off with one with pictures =)
Another idea...look at the endless crafting list on Leslie's blog...

you can get cookbooks at the library, to save on costs. more to come, but on a deadline.

Why not volunteer? There are so many awesome organizations out there who would clamor for a few hours a week of your time. Giving back feels good and it's such a nice way to meet new people too.

Going along with sarah, you can volunteer at a cooking school. Wham...2 birds, 1 stone! I used to volunteer at Sur La Table cooking classes, all you do is pass out papers and do dishes, but you get to sit in on the class, and learn a ton. The classes cost like $75, but nothing for the volunteers. I think they have changed it since I stopped volunteering and now they actually pay volunteers minimum wage.

i was just thinking, this is an idea post for leslie to respond to :)

i second the idea of volunteering for cooking classes, you will learn a ton/have free food, and mingle

Or maybe you could volunteer at a soup kitchen or somewhere to gain cooking skills and help those truly in need (not that the soccer mom's at Williams Sonoma or Sur la Table cooking classes aren't in need but...you know..they're not exactly in dire straights, are they?!). I really learned to cook by volunteering at the Hamilton Family Homeless Shelter in the Haight in San Francisco when I was in high school. It was, and continues to be, one of the most illuminating experiences of my life. Plus I got a great recipe for pasta from the head cook! And I met lots of neat people who I never would have met if I was stuck in the burbs of Albany

epicurious.com and marthastewart.com have tons of recipes to start with, i made good use when i was pregnant and practicing

in terms of volunteering - what about a local women's political group - great way to meet women in chicago, and who knows is that wouldn't help with the job hunt! or animal rescue? or at a museum? (And i'm all for free or discounted museum days.) nothing that would take up too much time or commitment.

or what about picking up your camera again - you had such an eye in college, i loved your photos, chicago seems like such a great backdrop for interesting shots.
