home sweet home part 2

Also on the 2nd shopping day: we went to an area not unlike fashion island to do some more damage to my dad’s credit card. I needed a new watch battery and as it happened there was a jewelry store right there so we stopped in. I didn’t get my watch battery b/c my watch is a diving watch and they would have to send it out in order to make sure that when the battery was replaced it was all water tight and the seals were ok. They could put a battery in for me right then and there, but then I wouldn’t be able to go in the water with it which totally defeats its purpose and I’m sure I’d forget about that and then I’d ruin my watch and in any case whatever. While we were waiting, we looked around and saw some lovely engagement rings. I wanted to ask about them on behalf of my mother, but she didn’t really want to. Too bad! I asked the sales lady to price a few for us so we’d have an idea. Here’s the quick backstory: my dad has never technically bought mom a diamond ring. The first ring’s diamond came from my grandfather’s side of the family (I forget exactly who) and probably about 20 years ago the diamond fell out in a neighbor’s yard during a garage sale. They searched high and low, but no one could find it. So the insurance company (not dad) replaced it. Remember I mentioned my mom’s arthritis? It cause her fingers to swell. Badly. So years and years ago she had both her band and ring cut and a clasp put in so she wouldn’t have to try and get it over her knuckles. Well, a few years ago her engagement ring fell off and she didn’t even notice til it was way too late and she had no idea where to even begin to look for it. She’s been wearing her band and an emerald/diamond ring she got many years ago. So, I told her that it being their 35th wedding anniversary and all that dad should get her a new ring (perfect timing b/c the company is selling an asset and it should close end of this month! Whoo hoo!). so we looked at several of them and found a style she really liked. Then we calculated the avg annual cost based on her life expectancy (of 80, for numbers sake) and mine (again, 80 for numbers ease) and found out it would be less than 300 bucks a year if he bought a 20k ring. My dad likes numbers so we decided to present it to him as that. He is so unromantic! His reply was “I didn’t know you wanted a diamond. If you want a diamond we’ll go get a diamond”. Well, geez dad, doesn’t every girl want pretty jewelry!? I tried to convince him that he should surprise her with one and I’d even tell him what she liked – he just had to go get it. And he said “she wouldn’t like that. We don’t do stuff like that”. Uh, ok, but you could always start! Mom would love it! But b/c he’s a boy and doesn’t think like us girls, he couldn’t fathom the idea that mom would like a surprise ring. Oooooooooooh dad. That’s the beauty of being with someone since you were 16 and she was 14 – 40 years already! Holy crap that’s a long long time. I think that deserves a pretty ring, don’t you girls?!

Well after that we went to a lingerie store to get fitted for new bras. We both tried on a million bras (we were there like 2 hours I think!) and found a couple we liked. Then we headed for a late lunch at café express and then crave which is a cupcake store as the car was parked right there and we couldn’t just walk past! Then we went to nordstroms…

Katherine, your trip sounds like so much fun! Did you end up getting the size small lime green capris?
If your dad is looking for a diamond, you can pass along Eddie Zahebian's information. He is Dave's awesome diamond guy.
I can't wait to hear the rest of the details about your adventures in Houston.
